Advancements in the field of medicine continue around the world giving hope to people suffering from various ailments, whether in a mild or serious state. New medicines and treatments are now being offered at hospitals but unfortunately, they come at a high price.

It is understandable then that some people, particularly those in the low to middle-income groups, still rely on the traditional form of treatment to cure their illnesses. The older folks, for instance, strongly believe that herbal medicine is as effective in healing the body inside and out.

Traditional Thai Medicine

The traditional Chinese (TCM) and Thai medicine (TTM) are among the most well known worldwide. They cover different types of treatment which have been proven effective by many people including the non-Asians.

Traditional Thai Medicine

The traditional Thai medicine is an ancient healing method that combines the folk healing and spiritual rituals of Thailand, the ayurvedic practices of India and traditional Chinese medicine. It has many branches to include the massage, yoga stretching, herbal medicine and spiritual healing.

The Thai massage is a combination of massage, acupressure, meridian work and yoga positions. The yoga involves several postures similar to the Hatha Yoga while the herbal medicine involves the use of ayurvedic herbs and other materials native to Thailand.

The spirituality aspect, on the other hand, is a mix of Theravada Buddhism and indigenous beliefs. The Thais believe that respecting spiritual beings can help prevent misfortune and diseases.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) dates back to the ancient times more than 5,000 years ago in China. Its popular forms are the herbal treatments and acupuncture while its other less known practices include the dietary and mind-body therapies as well as cupping, massage and moxibustion.

Treatment is normally individualized to ensure proper healing of the mind and body. The procedure basically involves a practitioner interviewing the patient, touching the wrist to get the pulse, observing the tongue as well as hearing and smelling. From the information gathered and observations made, a procedure is then developed to achieve a balance between the yin and yang in the patient’s body.

In the U.S., TCM is recognized as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with more than 10,000 practitioners. Millions of people there have undergone acupuncture treatments and continue to use herbal remedies for healing purposes.

There’s no harm in trying one of these traditional healing methods. As long as one believes in them, there’s a possibility that ailments can be cured and a balanced mind and body can be achieved.

Don’t get me wrong. I love to receive gifts. But what is more attractive, especially around Valentine’s Day, than a person who finds joy in giving?

Leaving all the brain chemistry aside, giving just feels great. Anyone who has experienced the look on a friend’s face when she opens a gift you knew she would love can vouch for that. There’s also a certain amount of pride that comes from gift-giving prowess. When you give appropriate gifts, people start to view you as a smart and generous human being. It’s actually a nice little boost for the ego.

But what if gift giving isn’t your thing or you’re not a good gift-giver? Nonsense. If you can walk, talk, or breathe, you’re qualified to be an excellent gift giver. It may take you awhile to be on a par with Santa Claus, but it’s all about the baby steps.

Try to find an interesting, personal connection with the recipient of your gift. Maybe you both fly a lot and you have a neck pillow that makes long flights more bearable. The pillow is a perfect gift idea because you’ve established a connection and they will feel like you’ve taken time to think about them individually. It doesn’t have to be a grandiose, show-stopping gift – something small is often better.

Also, good gift giving often has more to do about the thought or effort you put into the gift rather than the gift itself. There’s a reason thank you notes reflect so well on those who take the time to write them, and it’s not because of the value of the paper. Thank you notes show the recipient you took a few minutes out of your day to acknowledge something about them you appreciate, something pretty rare and special in this day and age.

Gifts mean essentially the same thing. Unless you’re buying something extra-special for a close friend or family member, it’s really about the fact that you did something above and beyond the perfunctory Facebook wall post to acknowledge them.

Keep these things in mind when looking for gift ideas and gift away! You’ll be glad you did.

A lot of people think that wearing contact lenses are for aesthetic reasons only. What they do not know is that this type of corrective eyewear is also prescribed by doctors for medical reasons.

A growing number of people prefer to use the contacts these days over the traditional eyeglasses. Many find them comfortable with no constraints when put on and wearers also enjoy good eyesight with a wider field of vision compared to the glasses.

It is estimated that some 34 million in the U.S. and 3.7 million in the U.K. are wearing contact lenses. Worldwide, the number is said to be at 100 billion. Majority or 87 percent wear the soft type while 13 percent wear the rigid gas permeable (RGP) type. Among the wearers, many of those aged from 26-39 wear the soft contacts while a great number of those aged 40 and above wear the RGP. These statistics are based on a 1999 study entitled Contact Lens Spectrum.

In many parts of the world today, contact lenses particularly the soft type are more preferred over the spectacles and even refractive eye surgery. There are various reasons why this is so.

Firstly, the contacts provide a full field of view whereas the glasses have a restricted field of vision.

Secondly, the wearer can enjoy an excellent stability of vision with no glare.

Thirdly, the person wearing them experiences comfort right from the start and for the long term. With the glasses, it can take time to get adjusted to the new vision.

In addition, the risks involved in using contacts are far lesser than the eyeglasses. The risk of loss and complication is low as well as the risk of damage during wear and handling.

On the aesthetic aspect, wearing the contacts can boost a person’s self confidence. Many of those who are conscious of the way they look normally do not want to wear the spectacles believing that it will only make them look like a nerd or someone older. Also, the contacts do not cause steam and therefore provides clear vision all the time even with long use.

The only most important requirement when you decide to wear contact lenses is your patience. Remember it takes an effort and some time to put them on each morning and remove them again at night. You also need to clean it regularly and even sterilize them after every use using the appropriate solutions.

So weigh everything first before making a final decision to switch to the contact lenses.
